During opening celebrations for HOME1947: Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, an exhibition exploring the lives and stories of the millions displaced during the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan, Noor Ahmed, general manager for the Citizens Archive of Pakistan, and Sameer Khan, HOME1947 producer, joined Dr. Nyla Ali Khan, Kashmiri professor, author and women’s rights advocate, for an insightful and intentional conversation on partition and history, the resilience of community, shared human experiences and the impact of this exhibition.

"Partition for, I think all of us, is quite personal," Ahmed said during the conversation. "It was a moment that you categorized every other sort of event in your life, in your recorded history, alongside. And growing up, there were big gaps when I would speak to my grandparents generation about partition and about the history we would talk about and the history we wouldn't talk about. Stories and exhibitions such as this one really help contextualize our history and our shared humanity."

HOME1947: Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy

HOME1947 features the work of Pakistani Canadian filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy. The exhibition aims to craft visual memories through a series of short documentary and narrative films, virtual reality, photographs and oral histories, objects and archival documents, and immersive installations, recreating the long-lost sights, sounds and smells of what millions once called home.

Watch the full conversation below, and be sure to swing by the Eleanor Kirkpatrick Main Gallery to witness this captivating and moving exhibition for yourself, on view through July 22, 2024.
