Studio School offers one- or multi-session workshops throughout the year on a variety of topics. These offerings are updated regularly, so please check back for updates.

Online courses: Many workshops are taught in real-time over Zoom. Students are responsible for having a reliable Internet connection and a Zoom-compatible device with microphone, speakers and camera.

Outdoor courses: Some workshops are held outside in the Studio Building's Leigh Ann and Paul Albers Outdoor Studio. Masks are required and social distancing practices will be enforced. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed or cancelled and all registrants will be notified via email.

Online Workshop | Woodland Quillwork Workshop

Discover the art and history of woodland quillwork as it relates to the Anishinaabek. In this live, online workshop, you'll learn how to harvest a porcupine, remove the quills, and how the quills are prepared and sorted by size. Participants will also learn how and when to harvest sweetgrass and birch bark as well as how these natural materials are prepared for use in woodland quillwork. Participants will be shown the tools needed for woodland quillwork. Finally, participants will learn basic quilling techniques using natural quills and will have the opportunity to make an ornament using their new knowledge on woodland quillwork. All tools and materials are labeled in Anishinaabemowin and are included in the cost of tuition. The cost of the included kit ($40) is non-refundable upon registration. Workshop | Raku Ceramics

Join us for a two-day hands-on workshop as we dive into the topic of Raku ceramics. Together, we'll explore traditional Japanese Raku as it relates to religious and cultural practices and its later expression among American ceramicists in the mid-1900s. During the first workshop session, you'll use hand building techniques to create tea bowls. We'll meet the following weekend to glaze and fire your works using the Raku process.

This in-person workshop will take place outside. Masks are required and social distancing will be enforced. All materials and tools are included in the cost of tuition and this course is open to students of all levels. Registration closes Sunday, Nov. 1 at midnight.

Happy homemade holidays! Together with Artist Virginia Sitzes, you'll use basic printmaking techniques to create your own set of festive greeting cards to share with friends and family. We'll provide the instruction, printmaking ink and tools, and one full (22" x 30") sheet of high quality printmaking paper. If you're bit by the monotype printing bug, we will have more paper on hand for you to purchase. This class will be held in Studio School's Leigh Ann and Paul Albers Outdoor Studio. Masks are required and social distancing will be enforced. Although we will have restaurant-style gas heaters, you will want to bundle up and head over to Café Contemporary for a hot drink to go! Registration closes December 6th at 11:59 p.m.
