Teen Courses

Studio School provides classes and workshops for teens on an ongoing basis. These courses offer a creative outlet as well as an opportunity to learn and expand skills, improve techniques and experiment with familiar and new media.

Questions about a multi-week class? Tuition for most multi-week courses does not include materials. When signing up for a class, all students agree to abide by the policies set forth in the Student Handbook.

No class Monday, October 16.
This class is designed for those new to sewing, those who haven’t sewn in a while, those afraid of their machines, those who want to build a stronger sewing foundation or those needing a refresher on the basics of machine sewing. Instructor and artist Amber Layne created a curriculum that is comprehensive and empowering for students. Using project-based learning, this class teaches how needles, threads, fabrics, stitches and your sewing machine work together as a team. Gain in-depth knowledge about your sewing machine while mastering the fundamentals of sewing through fun and useful projects.

• An instructor-provided materials kit ($56.25) must be purchased on the first day.
• Students must provide their own working, preferably recently serviced, sewing machine to each meeting.

• If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can rent one through Studio School. Daily rentals are $12. Four-week rentals are $40 and eight-week rentals are $80.
• If one class is postponed due to weather or unforeseen instructor circumstances, the rain date is November 27.

REQUIRED Prerequisites: Students must own a sewing machine with embroidery capabilities—sewing and embroidery combo machines only.

No class October 12 and 19.

Do you own a sewing machine with embroidery capabilities, but don’t know (or can’t remember) how to use it? This beginning course covers the exciting basics of machine embroidery. Learn to work with proper tools, threads and stabilizers and to understand stitching techniques. Through instructor-led projects, you’ll learn the basic skills needed to succeed — and you’ll receive digital designs to keep.

Required Supplies
• a serviced sewing machine with embroidery capabilities (sewing and embroidery combo machines only — no multi-needle machines), electric cord, foot pedal, machine manual and all tools, feet, hoops and accessories that came with your machine.

• An instructor-provided kit that includes threads, scissors, needles, bobbins, several types of stabilizers and three of instructor Amber Layne’s favorite sewing tools.. The kit must be purchased ($106.70) on the first night of class.

• Beyond the required kit, you will need additional fabric and notions that will be discussed in class.

No experience necessary. Want to escape your workaday life to roam the elvish wonders of Iceland but can’t pony up two months’ rent for a ticket to Reykjavik? We got you! Create your own magic-mushroom-forest-fjord-fiber wonderland. Include elves! Or trolls! Incorporate fairly lights and soon enough Iceland will be saving money to visit you.

F23 Draw Fund

Beginners welcome! No experience necessary.

Artist and instructor and Chris Brizzard believes that anyone can learn to draw if they are taught the correct way. Join this fun and supportive class to learn basic drawing principles, such as shape, proportion, blocking in forms and depicting light and shadow. If you start the class not knowing how to draw, you will end the class drawing from life! Chris is represented by 1515 Lincoln Gallery in Oklahoma City.

Work with printmaker Wesley Kramer to carve and print woodcuts. Wesley’s work combines woodcuts into interactive zines and he’s going to teach you how to make both. No experience necessary.

No experience necessary. This class teaches you three different ways to dye. Artist Amy Young will demonstrate how to dye naturally, how to dye using acid, and how to dye using reactive fiber techniques. So much dying and so little time, right? Custom dye clothes, wool or cotton fabric, or wool or cotton yarn and fiber for all your sewing, knitting, weaving or crafting projects!
