Fiber Arts

Oklahoma Contemporary offers the very best in fiber arts classes, workshops and opportunities for independent exploration. Located in The Studios building, the Fiber Art Studio features many floor and frame looms, as well as materials and equipment for dyeing. Fiber Arts instructors also offer courses in embroidery, sewing and other creative and contemporary applications of fiber traditions.

Workshop | Papermaking Basics

Learn the basics of how paper is made! Create your own high-quality, cotton paper for drawing, painting, printing and more in this introductory class. Workshop will cover basic sheet-forming techniques as well as creating watermarks and shaped paper. All materials are included, and no experience is necessary. The deadline to register is Sunday, Aug. 15 at 11:59 p.m.

Four-Week Class | Natural Fiber Dyeing

Natural dye

Whether you’re interested in dyeing your own yarn for knitting and weaving or just love the science of extracting color from wildflowers, this course is for you! Students will learn to tend a dye pot, prep fibers, keep a dye journal and explore color shifts using pH levels and modifiers. The deadline to register for this course is Sunday, July 25 at 11:59 p.m.

Four-Week Class | Intuitive Quilting

In this class for all levels, we will quilt without a pattern and use improvisation, intuition and play to compose unique shapes and patterns, bringing fluidity and movement into a traditionally measured practice. We will learn about the rich history of quilts, letting our ancestors inspire us to make things that are our own. You’ll learn all the basics of making a quilt, step by step, and make your own — there is no wrong way to make a quilt! Prior quilting experience is not necessary, but you should have a working knowledge of basic sewing techniques. Students will need to bring their own recently serviced sewing machine to each class. Registration closes Sunday, June 27 at 11:59 p.m.

Sewing

Sewing Fundamentals is designed for those new to sewing, those who haven’t sewn in a while, those afraid of their machines, those who want to build a stronger foundation in their sewing knowledge or those needing a refresh on the basics of machine sewing. Students will obtain in-depth knowledge of their sewing machines while mastering the fundamentals of sewing through fun, useful, instructor-selected projects. Students must bring their own recently serviced sewing machine to each class and purchase an instructor-supplied kit of materials for $48 (members receive 10 percent off). Registration closes Sunday, June 27 at 11:59 p.m.
