Fiber Arts

Oklahoma Contemporary offers the very best in fiber arts classes, workshops and opportunities for independent exploration. Located in The Studios building, the Fiber Art Studio features many floor and frame looms, as well as materials and equipment for dyeing. Fiber Arts instructors also offer courses in embroidery, sewing and other creative and contemporary applications of fiber traditions.

Four-Week Class | Upcycled Jackets

F22 Up Cycled

Work with fashion designer and House of Northbrook creator Iman Knox to design and sew a custom jacket from upcycled fabric. Iman will provide a custom pattern that you will adapt to fit your style and your body. Iman’s priority is that you be you — so, flowy or tailored, long or short, shaggy or sharp, she’ll help you create a jacket that shifts your world and your closet.

Jackets will be machine sewn. You don’t need any tailoring skills — if you can thread your sewing machine, you’re ready for this class. If you don’t own a sewing machine, you can rent one through Studio School on the first day of class. Daily rentals are $12. Four-week rentals are $40, and eight-week rentals are $80.

Eight-Week Class | Weaving for the Holiday Table

Work with fiber artist Amy Young to weave custom table runners or placemats. Learn the basics of weaving structures and patterns on a floor loom. We can’t promise moist turkey or lump-free vegan gravy, but this class ensures your holiday table will look fantastic. No experience necessary!

No class on Oct. 24.

This class is designed for those new to sewing, those who haven’t sewn in a while, those afraid of their machines, those who want to build a stronger sewing foundation or those needing a refresher on the basics of machine sewing. Instructor and artist Amber Layne created a curriculum that is comprehensive and empowering for students. Using project-based learning, this class teaches how needles, threads, fabrics, stitches and your sewing machine work together as a team. Gain in-depth knowledge about your sewing machine while mastering the fundamentals of sewing through fun and useful projects.

An instructor-provided materials kit ($56.25) must be purchased on the first day. Required supplies: a serviced sewing machine, electric cord, foot pedal, machine manual and all tools, feet and accessories that came with your machine.

If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can rent one through Studio School. Daily rentals are $12. Four-week rentals are $40 and eight-week rentals are $80.

Prerequisite: Sewing Fundamentals

Build on skills acquired in Sewing Fundamentals. Learn advanced sewing techniques, such as darts, ruffles, pleats and other shaping techniques, curved sewing, top stitching, lining, creating and using buttonholes, and understanding and utilizing all types of zippers and elastics.

An instructor-provided kit ($63) including materials as well as three of Amber’s favorite sewing tools, must be purchased on the first night of class. Beyond the required kit, you will need additional fabric and notions. Any additional needs will be discussed in class.

Prerequisite: Sewing Fundamentals, Sewing Fundamentals Expanded

No Class Oct. 19 and Nov. 23. This advanced course expands the techniques taught in Sewing Fundamentals and Sewing Fundamentals Expanded. Learn the basics of taking and working with measurements and how to understand, work from and modify a simple pattern. Practice sophisticated sewing techniques while working on patterns chosen by instructor Amber Layne.

Students will purchase a course kit ($68) that includes a simple pattern and three of Amber’s favorite sewing tools, which aid in proper construction. Students will need some additional fabric and notions beyond what is supplied in the kit (these will be thoroughly discussed in class).

Supplies required: a serviced sewing machine, electric cord, foot pedal, machine manual and all tools, feet and accessories that came with your machine.

This class is open to all levels, but you must have taken Sewing Fundamentals. Work on self-directed sewing projects while benefiting from Amber Layne’s expertise and guidance. Experience Amber’s individualized help and learn new skills from fellow sewers. In the first class, Amber will help you choose and prepare the correct materials for your specific project. You’ll begin your project in week two.

Eight-Week Class | 2-D and 3-D Wool Felting

Explore 2-D and 3-D wet and dry felting with fiber artist Darci Lenker. Learn to needle felt on fabric and make felted sheets or balls that you can use to create soft sculptures like puppets toys or holiday decorations and ornaments. As part of the class, you’ll receive a small amount of wool specifically created for Studio School by the cute sheep at Mollie Spencer Farm. No experience necessary!

Eight-Week Class | Crochet Stuffed Toys and Holiday Decorations

No crochet experience necessary. Instructor Rachel Lynch has crocheted everything from couches for cats to Harry Potter characters and a be-mittened Bernie Sanders. You’ll choose from a variety of provided patterns and make stuffed toys and holiday decorations. Rachel will also teach you how to read and modify patterns.
