Showroom | Showcase is a series of installations by local artists in the Showroom, located at NW 11thand Broadway.
For our third edition of Showroom | Showcase, Grace Grothaus and Rena Detrixhe have collaborated on Wake. Wake is a multisensory installation comprised of a shallow body of water encompassing nearly the entire space of the shipping container that holds the second-floor gallery. The space for the viewer to inhabit is limited to a 4' x 8' section of floor at the gallery entrance.
Triggered by the viewer's presence, the surface of the water becomes animated by wave disturbances created via recorded audio played through a series of submerged speakers. Directional lighting reflects the water's movement onto the interior walls of the space. The interplay of water, sound and light is manifest across multiple modes of experience: the horizontal surface of the water itself, the dampened sounds from the speakers and the reflections of the water's undulations on the walls. After the viewer enters the space, the audio recordings continue to build in volume, causing the surface of the water to become increasingly turbulent. Once a predetermined amount of time has passed, the sound turns off and the water become placid again.
Wake becomes an immersive experience about water and its presence in our lives, in Oklahoma and on the planet.
